Positive & Collaborative Culture
At Scholar Academies, staff members meet weekly to share best practices, review student data, and create stronger lesson plans. Home Office team members collaborate with teachers, leaders and school-based staff to support life in our schools.
Approach that balances structure and autonomy
School-wide culture systems create a strong sense of community for students and staff. Our students understand the expectations for engagement in classrooms and community spaces and staff members hold students accountable by implementing clear consequences and rewards. These structures and the support of our culture team allow teachers to build a strong sense of community in the classroom while capitalizing on their individual strengths and creativity design daily lessons.
Talent Development & Coaching
Scholar Academies matches each teacher with an instructional coach who provides weekly feedback on lesson plans and instructional practices. Additionally, students are dismissed early on Fridays and the rest of the day is dedicated to professional development and team building. We also provide opportunities for experienced team members to take on formal and informal leadership roles in order to make an impact beyond their classrooms.

We set ambitious goals for our students, who often come in multiple grade levels behind. At Scholar Academies, we are dedicated to preparing students for success in college preparatory high schools. We offer our student support in the form of academic interventions, culture initiatives, and a focus on teacher development.

For Margaretha Ehret, the decision to teach at Young Scholars Frederick Douglass Charter School was about maximizing her potential as an educator. After completing a two-year commitment to Teach For America in Wilmington, Delaware, Ms. Ehret was looking for and organization “…that was going to help develop me into a solid classroom teacher and help nurture all aspects of my teaching including planning, preparation, instructional delivery, and behavior management.”
When talking to Ms. Ehret, one thing is for certain. The people she works with have made all the difference in her teaching experience, and she has a very special relationship with her students. “I have met not only amazing coworkers, but lifelong friends through my teaching at YSD. It is so nice to come to work with so many like-minded individuals who are committed and dedicated to the education of our students. At the same time these are also people I can laugh and smile with! All of my fellow teachers have made my job a lot easier in so many ways.”
The zest with which Ms. Ehret talks about her colleagues can only be matched by the way she beams when the topic of her students comes up. “Our students are extremely resilient and overcome great obstacles on a daily basis and being a mentor/role-model/life coach for them is always something I find to be of great value as an educator. Whether it is a text from a parent about a child’s “first lost tooth”, or a trip with a student and their family to a carnival, or a handwritten letter saying “I love you Ms. Eric”, all these moments help continue to inspire me to provide for our students what I know they deserve.”
In Ms. Ehret’s classroom, kindergarten is a fun year of growth that always has her excited to watch her students grow from only knowing how to write their names to leaving kindergarten with the ability to read basic sight word books. “I am absolutely astonished every year come February/March when I realize, ‘wait a second, my kids are actually able to read now!’ It is an overwhelming sence of pride to think about getting our first little scholars reading, but there is constantly the thoughts of how can I push them even more.”
